Two retail groups are vying to operate duty-free shops at the Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok Thailand.
Airports of Thailand (AoT), which operates and maintains the airport along with five others, named retail giants King Power International Group and The Mall Group as contenders for the operations.
King Power Duty Free Co. currently holds the right to operate the duty-free shops at the airport, but the concession is set to expire in September 2022.
The AoT said it wants the new bidder to prepare two years before the existing contract finishes.
The winning bidder will be announced on December 16.
“The tender is expected to be fierce as both companies are likely to offer 'big deals' to secure the concession to operate out of the capital's second airport, which will mean bigger profit sharing for us,” said AoT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn.
The two companies will be invited at the Don Muang Airport on December 12 and 13 to share their vision for the duty-free shopping outlets.
Don Muang Airport’s duty-free area covers some 4,000 square meters (sqm) of gross floor area—with 2,000 sqm each in terminals 2 and 3. AoT is underway with the construction of the third terminal which will serve only international flights.
Earlier this year, King Power also won the bidding to operate duty-free shops at four airports being managed by AoT, namely the Suvarnabhumi Airport, Hat Yai International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, and Phuket Airport.
