The removal of the red flag status from Thailand’s aviation sector has opened many doors for the local airlines. One carrier still waiting to fully take advantage of this is Thai VietJet Air (TVJA). The offshoot of Vietnamese VietJet Air is among ten Thai-based airlines that have not yet had their air operator certificates (AOCs) re-issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).

As soon as it gets its AOC re-certified, the LCC can start its planned expansion. TVJA Chief Executive Officer Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh said the plan includes increasing the fleet, increasing passenger volumes and expanding TVJA’s international network.

Ms. Binh said:

Having our Air Operator Certificate [AOC] recertified by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand [CAAT] really allows us to activate our growth plan.

It is expected that TVJA will be next in line for the re-issued AOCs. So far, 11 Thai airlines, including major passenger carriers Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia have had their AOCs re-certified before the CAAT’s deadline of 31st August this year.

The remaining, uncertified carriers, including here Thai VietJet Air, are currently banned from operating international routes.

When it comes to expanding its fleet, TVJA plans to add 8 to 10 new Airbus A320s to its fleet every year starting from next year. The goal is to double the number of passengers its fleet can carry from the current 1 million to 2 million in 2018.

As for international routes, the priority is Vietnam. Starting next month, pending regulatory approval, TVJA will introduce new routes from Bangkok to Phu Quoc, Da Nang and Dalat. TVJA’s parent airline VietJet is also planning to strengthen connection between Thailand and Vietnam by introducing two new routes – Ho Chi Minh City to Chiang Mai from 12th December and HCM to Phuket from 15th December.

Speaking about the Thailand-Vietnam potential, Ms. Binh said:

We see that there are so many people waiting for us to launch.

TVJA’s second priority, said Ms. Binh, will be to introduce flights to Indonesia, Philippines and Myanmar from Thailand. Finally, TVJA will look to tap into the growing tourist traffic from mainland China to Thailand with new routes to southern China.
