Thai VietJet Air (TVJA) joins the ranks of Thai airlines that have been recertified by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, as the CAAT re-issued its air operator certificate yesterday (8th November). This means that TVJA can now operate international routes.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, Thai VietJet Air Chief Executive Officer Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh said:

We believe that the certification will further reassure the confidence of travellers across the globe in our services and the Thai airline industry as well.

Shortly after getting recertified by CAAT, TVJA announced that it will launch a new international route from Bangkok to Dalat, Vietnam. This service is slated to begin on 18th December, 2017. The carrier will operate Bangkok-Dalat route four times per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

This was a signal to TVJA to start thinking about expanding its international services and according to TVJA CEO, the priority here will be routes to Vietnam and the ASEAN region, but the carrier also wants to take a piece of the cake in the increasingly lucrative Chinese market with services to southern China in particular.

At the moment, the Thai-registered carrier appears to be focusing on adding new routes to its international flight schedule. As for domestic routes, there are currently no plans to add new routes to TVJA domestic network, but several routes, in particular Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Phuket and Phuket-Chiang Rai, may see their frequencies increased in the near future.

So far, 12 Thai airlines have been recertified by CAAT and are now allowed to operate international services (Thai VietJet Air was 12th). Nine more carriers remain sans their AOCs and are at the moment restricted to domestic flights. However, they may not have to wait too long, as CAAT Director Chula Sukmanop announced that two more carriers, Asia Atlantic and Orient Thai will also get their AOCs re-issued later this month.

The remaining Thai-based carriers will receive their AOCs, he said, by the end of January, 2018, once all the audits are complete.

CAAT is re-issuing AOCs in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s standards. ICAO posted a red flag status on Thai civil aviation in 2015 for “significant safety concerns”, effectively banning Thai-based airlines from operating international routes. The red flag was lifted early in October.
