In a bid to attract more passengers, the Transport Ministry of Thailand has embarked on a project worth 22 million baht in order to upgrade four Airport Rail Link trains and streaming services. This should help the trains move faster and will also reduce travel times for passengers.

With this upgrade, the passenger capacity will hike from 61,500 passengers per day to 72,000 passengers per day.

Upgrade Increases Train Speeds, Decreases Waiting Time

In addition, Deputy Transport Minister Ormsin Chivapruck, who presided over the ceremony of launching the first renovated train yesterday, said train speeds will increase to 140 kilometers per hour from the current 120 km/h, making travel faster. Also, according to Ormsin, waiting time for passengers will be reduced from 12 minutes per trip to 10 minutes.

The first renovated train passed both safety and speed testes successfully, while the other three trains should be ready for use by the end of the year. The new train now has new flooring and more seating places, while the space has also been rearranged for people using wheelchairs.

According to Mr Ormsin, the tests showed that the train’s brake system and speeds were both within acceptable standards.

Thai Deputy Minster said the overhaul should improve the commuting experience for travelers.

Operator Planning to Convert Express Line to City Line Trains

Right now, there are nine trains in service, including five City Line trains and four Express Line trains connecting the Suvarnabhumi International Airport with the Phaya Thai area. The City Line trains stop at all eight stations along this route. Since many passengers don’t even use the Express Line, the operator, SRT Electrified Train Co, decided to upgrade and convert these into City Line Trains.

SRT Electrified Train Co is a subsidiary of the State Railway of Thailand and apparently looks to purchase seven more trains under a 4.4 billion baht budget. At the moment, said the Deputy Transport Minister Ormsin, the company is drafting the terms of reference and should call bidding early in the following year. Mr Ormsin also commented that the new trains will improve the company’s services and allow it to serve passengers around the clock.
