THAI Airways International subsidiary THAI Smile revealed plans to transform from a “light service” premium carrier into a full-fledged premium airline.

By doing this, THAI Smile hopes to join the likes of SilkAir, Singapore and Cathay Dragon and become one of the foremost airlines in Asia within the next five years.

In lieu of its plan to become a full-service premium airline, THAI Smile plans to expand its international presence with flights within a four-and-a-half radius of Thai capital. In addition, THAI Smile also aims to add more than 10 new international destinations to its itinerary and is looking toward China, India and the ASEAN region, where it hopes to take advantage of the growing travel demand.

Acting CEO of THAI Smile Woranate Laprabang said this expansion is in line with the airline’s route plan and supports THAI’s “ASEAN Connect” initiative to improve the link between Thailand and neighboring states in South Asia.

Capt. Woranate also said THAI Smile’s new positioning is an important step to show where its place in the market is and where it will go from here.

On the matter of international expansion, THAI Smile will start off on 27th January, with a new daily service between Bangkok and Zhengzhou, China. Next comes the daily service from Bangkok to the capital of Sabah state in Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu on 1st March and on the same month, 26th, THAI Smile will launch services from Bangkok to Phnom Penh, Vientiane and Yangon to supplement THAI on those.

Finally, THAI Smile will also take over Bangkok-Kunming and Bangkok-Xiamen from its parent airline and plans to introduce regular flights between Bangkok and Cebu, Philippines.

All of this only continues THAI Smiles’ international routes growth, which will quickly, closed the gap compared to domestic routes from 80:20 in 2016 to a projected 55:45 in 2017. At the moment, THAI Smile’s network numbers 10 domestic and 11 international routes.

In addition to expanding its international network, THAI Smile will also make some other changes, including introducing a new colour scheme for its logo, upgrade passenger services and opening airport lounges
