National airline Thai Airways International (THAI) and European aircraft manufacturer Airbus have on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Somkid Jatusripitak. The MOU’s main focus is on studying the development of a new maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at U-Tapao Airport.
The MOU was signed by THAI Acting President Usanee Sangsingkeo and Airbus Commercial Aircraft President Mr. Fabrice Bregier at the head offices of THAI. The signing was also witnessed by Thai Minister of Transport Mr. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, Royal Thai Navy Admiral Thaweechai Boon-anan and Thai Chairman of the Board of Directors Mr. Areepong Bhoocha-Oom.
After signing the MOU for THAI, Acting President Usanee Sangsingkeo said:
THAI has reached initial agreement with Airbus to exchange necessary information and jointly evaluate the potential development of a TG MRO Complex Development at U-Tapao International Airport, which is part of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development plan 2017-2021. This will drive Thailand to become the most modern Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Center in the Asia-Pacific, equipped with the best innovation and technology that adheres to international standards, and furthermore support other aviation business industries that comply with the Government’s policies.
She continued:
The new aircraft maintenance center will serve airlines across the region and worldwide as well as create sustainable revenue for THAI and Thailand, bringing the country closer towards Thailand 4.0 as the future Gateway to Asia
Mr. Bregier said:
This exciting new project will help to meet strong demand for maintenance services in the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region. With the fleet in the region set to almost triple to over 15,000 aircraft over the next 20 years, this project represents a sound opportunity for Thailand to develop its footprint in the aerospace sector.
Thailand’s Deputy PM added:
Many may have seen [an ambition to turn Thailand into] a regional aviation hub in Asia and the Pacific as only a dream in the past. But now that Airbus has decided to choose Thailand as an aircraft maintenance and repair centre and THAI as a partner, this clearly shows Thailand is definitely a real hub in this region.
Following the completion of the MRO at U-Tapao, Thailand will be one step closer to becoming an aviation hub in the Asia Pacific.
