If you thought that Suvarnabhumi Airport was crowded now, get ready for even longer queues. According to the airport Director Sirote Duangratana, the busiest airport in Thailand will handle up to 59 million passengers in 2017, further adding to the congestion there.

That would be about 5% more than last year’s 55.9 million.

Mr. Sirote said, referring to the “zero dollar” tourism packages from China:

The numbers show a crackdown on “zero dollars” tourism had no direct impact.

These packages allow travellers from China to buy their fares to Thailand dirt cheap (or get them for free even), but the caveat is that they then must buy overpriced goods and/or services from the company’s partners.

With the crackdown on “zero dollar” tourism, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand declined in the last few months, but fortunately for the country’s tourism and aviation industry, the number of travellers coming from other countries has increased.

Mr. Sirote has based his prediction on the number of travellers in the first five months of 2017 (January-May).

He also said that the Suvarnabhumi Airport plans to introduce automatic passport scanners for international passengers. This is already available to Thai’s, but doesn’t seem that well accepted, as only 60% of domestic customers are using it.

New Suvarnabhumi Bus Service Introduced

Meanwhile, the airport has introduced a new bus service to downtown Bangkok. The service will allow passengers to go from the airport to the Khao San Road and Sanam Luang and will be operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA).

It will be handled by 10 Euro 2 busses (all with air condition) every day between 6:00 am and 8:00 pm from Gate 7 on the first floor of the terminal. Buses will leave every 45 minutes, according to BMTA.

The bus fare will be 60 baht per person.

The new bus route will take the buses along the motorway, from where they will take the expressway to Yommarat. From there, they will hit Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, Bang Lamphu and Khao San tourist hub and finally make the last stop at Sanam Luang, near the Grand Palace, before it goes back along the same route to Suvarnabhumi.
