As Thailand steadily recovers from the COVID-19 outbreak, a survey reveals that more than half of Thai respondents intend to travel abroad this year. Europ Assistance's "2022 Holiday Barometer" survey conducted between April 26 and May 16 indicated that approximately 56% of 1,000 Thai respondents planned to travel abroad this summer. This is a 7-point increase from 2021. These people are very interested in visiting Asian nations such as Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.
Since the Thailand Pass was launched on November 1 of last year, there has been much discussion about foreigners returning to Thailand. But now there is a lot of pent-up demand for Thai outbound travel, mostly for short-haul trips in the region.
Additionally, more Thais are contemplating domestic travel, with 18% of Thai respondents anticipating domestic travel. This is five percentage points higher than in 2021. This summer, 69 percent of Thai vacationers planned to travel, a 25 percent increase from 2021. The survey also indicated that Thais are getting increasingly fond of "workations." Seventy percent of all Thai respondents intend to work while travelling this summer.
Despite the fact that economic conditions are the top concern for travelers, 66 percent of Thai respondents stated that their travel expenses will be maintained or only slightly reduced. The summer travel budget of the average Thai visitor is 62,800 baht, an increase of 18 percent from 2021.
Marie Duchesne-Ferchal, the head of goods and marketing at Europ Assistance, remarked that after two years of confinement, Thais are aching to break free.
Two years after being stranded in the country, Thais are keen to travel despite inflation and rising commodities prices.
The current survey conducted by Europ Assistance directly contradicts remarks made in April by a Thai travel firm, Kangwal Holiday, indicating the majority of Thais are still hesitant to travel abroad. It appears that the relaxation of COVID-19 limitations is encouraging Thais to travel abroad. Now that Thailand Pass is about to expire in July, we are likely to see an increase in this behavior among Thais.
