Over the New Year season, it is anticipated that the number of travellers transiting through Suvarnabhumi airport will increase to an average of 145,000 per day.
The daily figure, according to Kittipong Kittikachorn, director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, would bring the total number of travellers passing through the airport from December 29 to January 4 to 1.01 million, and of this total, 771,244 would be foreign tourists and 248,437 would be local travellers.
Over this period, there will be a total of 5,443 flights, including 3,600 from other countries. On average, there will be 778 flights per day at the airport.
Over the long New Year's weekend, 79 more flights have been requested by 15 carriers. Bangkok Airways was looking for 24, Jin Air was looking for 14, and T'way Air was looking for eight of them.
To handle the increasing number of passengers flying, the airport has increased the number of officers at the security checkpoints for arrival and departure. According to Mr. Kittipong, this will help cut queues, and an interpreter service will also be offered.
He also said that the airport had checked how its luggage loaders worked and told the ground workers for Thai Airways International (THAI) and Worldwide Flight Services Bangkok Air Ground Handling Co Ltd to get ready for the busy season.
According to Mr. Kittipong, the airport has also worked with public transportation companies to arrange for more cars to be on standby for airport passengers, which would help reduce congestion there.
From midnight on December 29 to midnight on January 3, the airport will eliminate costs for long-term parking in Zone C as a New Year's present to the general public. There will also be a free shuttle service from the parking lot to the passenger terminal.
