In two years, the fleet of Thai-registered carrier NokScoot should be bigger by seven wide-body planes. The joint venture between Nok Air (Thailand) and Scoot (Singapore) has announced its plans to add seven Boeing 777-200 aircraft with an eye towards India and China markets.

At the moment, the medium-to-long-haul LCC has lobbied to around 30 different parties, including other carriers and lessors, to be its source for the seven B777-200s over the following two years.

NokScoot currently operates three Boeing 777-200 aircraft and is now assessing proposals for additional seven. Its main requisite is for the planes not to be in service for more than five years.

According to Piya Yodmani, Chief Executive Officer at NokScoot, the larger fleet will allow the low-cost carrier to make forays into India, as the market was on its radar for quite some time now. Mr Piya said he expects the first three Boeing 777-200 planes to be delivered by May next years.

As for the remaining four planes, NokScoot will have to bide its time until the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) both lift their red flag on the Thailand’s civil aviation authority.

The downgrade prevents Thai-based airlines from opening new routes, adding more flights to their existing routes to foreign countries or to change the type of the aircraft they use on their routes.

However, with Thailand’s civil aviation issues likely to be resolved in 2018, NokScoot will likely have the remaining four ordered Boeing 777-200 planes delivered in 2018.

At the same time, as ICAO and FAA remove the red flag, NokScoot will be free to launch services to Japan and South Korea, both of which it has targeted for some time now.

NokScoot will also, Mr Piya said, remain on the route for Taipei with four weekly flights. The LCC will also continue operating its five current flights from Don Muang, Bangkok to Chinese cities of Chongqing, Nanjing, Qingdao, Tianjin and Shenyang and will launch a new operation to Dalian on 23rd September. NokScoot will fly three times per week between Bangkok and Dalian.
