The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) released on Monday data showing a decline of 10.14% Year-on-Year (YoY) when it comes to travellers handled by its members for the first two month of the year. According to ATTA data, member companies handled 906,558 travellers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports between January and February 2017, while in the same period last year, they handled 1,008,879 visitors.
The decline, ATTA President Charoen Wangananont explained, was due to an above average growth registered during the Jan-Feb period last year.
ATTA members recorded the most visits out of China, 473,091 and that was despite a 23.62% drop from last year’s 619,379 visits. Visits from Russia, however went up 17.53% from 60,316 visits to 70,890 visits. These two markets were followed by South Korea with 47,253 visits (up 37.33% from last year), India with 35,103 visits (up 36.04% from last year) and Japan with 32,556 visits (up 5.38 % from last year).
Individually, visits in January dropped 11.53% YoY from 490,544 visits in 2016 to 433,996 in 2017, while visits in February dropped 8.3% to 472,562.
When it comes to Suvarnabhumi, ATTA members recorded a 7.28% decline between the same month in 2016 and 2017. This year, member companies recorded 341,009 foreign arrivals, while last year 367,784 international tourists landed at the airport.
Most bookings were from China, 134,460, down 26.78 from February, 2016. Russia followed with 24.06% more visits YoY (34,805 from 28,055) and South Korea came up third with 23,140 visits in February this year, 62.64% up from 14,228 visits in 2016.
As for Don Muang Airport, the association members recorded 12.62% fewer arrivals in February, 2017 (131,553) compared to February, 2016 (150,551).
Again, most foreign visitors came from China, 106,679, but this represented a 19.34% decline from February, 2016’s 132,253 visits. Visits from Indonesia increased 28.36% from 5,017 to 6,440 and visits from Vietnam also went up (36.76%) as 5,785 travellers arrived at Don Muang from this country in February, compared to 4,230 in February, 2016.
