Thai Lion Air (TLA) is set to invest over 400 million baht on a new integrated training facility in Navanakorn Industrial Estate in Pathum Thani. This will help the carrier build its human resources in cabin and flight crews and in aircraft maintenance.

Thailand’s aviation industry is growing at a rapid rate, causing TLA’s manpower to become deficient. The new training facility should help it address this problem greatly. In addition, the facility will also be the cornerstone of a new growth plan Thai Lion Air has.

The opening of the facility is planned for July and it will include a full-flight simulator for the next generation of Boeing 737 aircraft, which is the mainstay of TLA’s current and future fleet.

TLA Training Bill is 50M Baht a Year

With the new facility, the airline is expecting to cut its training bills, which are right now about 50 million baht per year. TLA is sending its pilots and co-pilots to training schools in Indonesia and Singapore.

The facility will have 15 flight instructors, but as it gets more trainees this number will grow as needed.

According to Thai Lion Air Chief Executive Officer Aswin Yangkirativorn, the training centre will especially be of help to the TLA’s cabin crew. At the moment, the airline has 230 pilots, but as it expands its network it is estimated that it will need another 17 pilots and 34 co-pilots. TLA Director of Flight Operations Virin Anakevieng confirmed this, saying TLA will next year need another 33 pilots and co-pilots.

When it comes to aircrafts, TLA has a fleet of 21 Boeings. This includes 13 B737-900ER jets and 8 B737-800s. The carrier is to receive another three Boeings within the next few months and, according to TLA CEO Aswin, also plans to purchase two B737-8 MAX (which is the newest generation of B737 aircraft), two B737-800s and one B737-900ER.

TLA has recently started expanding its international network, focusing mostly on destinations in China. As such, the no-frills carrier operates flights from Don Muang, Bangkok to Chongqing, Jinan, Nanning and Taiyuan. Mr Aswin also said the airline is making plans for services to India, but would not say to which locations.
