Following two years of rehabilitation, said THAI Airways President Charamporn Jotikasthira, the national airline is starting to return to the black. THAI, he said, now enters a phase of fine-tuning routes and flights in order to make them more compatible with THAI’s location and fleet.

The new route plan, Mr Charamporn explained, will be in full motion around six months from October this year.

Mr Charamporn said:

Since we returned to the black, we can now resume some routes that we had temporarily terminated when cost cutting was our priority, and also open new routes that will support our network.

According to THAI President, the new flight schedule will improve efficiency of flying hour usage per plane from 11 to 13 hours per day. Once THAI improves the efficiency of its plane deployment, the airline will be able to include new routes without having to buy new aircraft for some time.

THAI to Fly to Tehran (1st October) and Moscow (15th December)

As of 1st October, THAI will start flying four times per week to Tehran, Iran from Bangkok. This route should have a relatively high cabin-load factor of 80 per cent and will mostly target Thai-bound travellers, business travellers as well as tourists from Malaysia and Australia traveling to Iran who are making a stop in Thailand.

THAI has also scheduled to reconnect Bangkok and Moscow from 15th December, also with four flights per week. Right now, the flag carrier is searching for partners which will help it improve the viability of the services on this route and has reached out to travel agents in 20 Russian cities, including Siberia.

THAI President had this to say:

From our study, this route has high demand both inbound and outbound. The study also found that demand from travelers in neighboring countries that want to fly to Moscow through Bangkok is relatively high.

THAI also plans to increase the number of flights to Melbourne by using Airbus A350-900XWB in the fourth quarter of this year.

Speaking about this, Mr Charamporn said:

This route allows us to use an aeroplane at its highest efficiency. Because it takes about nine hours to fly from Bangkok to Melbourne, it means we can use one aircraft to fly out and back within one day.
