Tourists in Thailand will not be penalized for overstaying amid their disrupted travel over the coronavirus outbreak.

On Monday, Immigration Bureau deputy spokesman Pol Col Choengron Rimphadi said that tourists stranded in the country need not pay for overstaying. Suvarnabhumi Airport, the main gateway to Thailand, has extended assistance to stranded tourists at the airport. Choengron said that passengers have already reached out to airlines for refunds and rescheduling of trips.

As of January 29, Wednesday, the number of infected individuals in mainland China alone rose to 5,974 - surpassing the 5,327 confirmed cases of SARS in 2003 - while the death toll increased to 132.

Beijing also extended the Lunar New Year holiday to February 2 from January 30 previously to control inbound and outbound travel and contain the spreading.

Last week, the Chinese government ordered a lockdown on Wuhan Airport to prevent the virus from spreading to other countries.
