According to the president of Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (Aerothai), Ms. Sarinee Saangprasit, Thailand currently boast the highest aviation growth of all countries in the ASEAN region. At the moment, Thailand’s annual aviation growth rate is between 10% and 13%, while the average in the region is 6.3%.

The countries aviation growth rate is also higher than the global average, said Ms. Saangprasit.

At the same time, Thailand’s share of air traffic volume is the highest in the region, with 28%, followed by Singapore’s 25%.

In order to have Thailand’s airspace better managed for security and commerce, Aerothai intends to talk to the countries air force about “flexible airspace" and will ask other state agencies for their aid in strengthening air traffic volumes. This includes the flag carrier Thai Airways International (THAI) and Airport of Thailand (AoT), which runs both Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi airports in the Thai capital.

Apart from them, Aerothai has also hired a consultancy firm from United Kingdom to have them study the country’s airspace management. The results of this study should be ready by the end of 2018.

The goal is for Thailand to serve up to 2.7 million air trips per year, said Ms. Saangprasit.

Ms Saangprasit said that Thailand must keep its high position by cooperating with other ASEAN countries that are in line to have a high aviation growth rate in the future, and not competing with them. This particularly goes for Vietnam and Myanmar, both of which expect a high growth rate in the future thanks to their thriving economies, dense population and flourishing tourism industries.

Also, Saangprasit said, Aerothai will continue to work with countries with big potential, including the CLMV group, consisting of Cambodia, Laos Myanmar and Vietnam and will work more closely on “aviation resources sharing”.

It is not clear what this collaboration will entail, but it should be clearer after the meeting of the ASEAN aeronautical radio agencies in Hanoi this May.

According to Saangprasit, the ASEAN countries will see the peak of their aviation growth rate in the next 15 years from now.
