Thai VietJet Air is set to launch before Christmas a new direct flight between Thailand and Vietnam.

A report by Bangkok Post said Monday that the budget carrier is launching direct flights between Ho Chi Minh and Pattaya via the U-Tapao Airport.

The airline said the new route is aimed at flying more travelers to Thailand.

At present, Thai VietJet serves cities in Thailand such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket as well as in Vietnam through Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Da Nang, Hai Phong, and Dalat.

Data from the Tourism and Sports Ministry showed that for the first 10 months of the year, nearly a million Vietnam nationals visited Thailand, representing a 2-percent uptick from the same period last year.

Vietnam is Thailand’s third largest market in terms of tourist arrivals after Malaysia and Laos.
