Despite not yet receiving its license to operate commercial flights, Thai VietJet Air (TVJA) is planning on expanding its network with another domestic route. The subsidiary of Vietnam’s VietJet Air has set its eyes on flying between Bangkok and Chiang Rai, starting on 29th October this year.
Should TVJA get permission to launch Bangkok-Chiang Rai, it would be a twice-daily service.
In addition, the carrier has already made its intention clear earlier that it wants to add flights to Hat Yai and Krabi to its domestic network, but also to Vietnam, China and Taiwan, internationally.
However, while domestic flights, including Bangkok-Chiang Rai, shouldn’t be a problem, TVJA will have to wait until it gets its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) recertified by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).
At the moment, Thai VietJet is among eleven Thai-based carriers that are still waiting to have their AOCs recertified by CAAT. Until then, they are not allowed to fly internationally.
Ten major Thai airlines, including Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai AirAsia X, NokScoot, Thai Airways International, Nok Air and others, have had their AOCs re-issued by CAAT.
AOC recertification is a part of CAAT’s efforts if they intend to lift the “red flag” status that the International Civil Aviation Organization imposed on Thailand for “significant safety concerns” anytime soon.
TVJA Director Chula Sukmanop is confident that his company will join the ten already recertified airlines very soon. Once it does, he said in an interview yesterday, TVJA will set its major expansion efforts in motion.
The airline currently only flies domestically. It’s only international route, Bangkok to Hai Phong, had been taken over by its parent airline VietJet Air, with CAAT’s permission, at least until TVJA’s AOC is recertified.
Domestically, TVJA operates three routes, Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Phuket and Phuket-Chiang Mai and is the only airline to operate daily flights on the third route.
The carrier started operating in September last year and has since transported around 800,000 passengers, using its small fleet of three Airbus A320 planes. These jets have a range of 3,440 kilometers and can carry around 150 passengers, depending on the configuration.
