Thailand-based airline Thai Smile is making big plans for the Mekong Region and currently plans to expand its network there by adding five new destinations. The airline is reportedly interested in adding new scheduled services to Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Phnom Penh in Cambodia and Vientiane and Luang Prabang in Laos.
President and chief executive officer of Thai Smile Mr. Woranate Laprabang talked about his company’s expansion plans last week at the Mekong Tourism Forum panel discussion. He said:
We are developing a network that will decrease connecting times from Thai Airways International (Thai Smile’s parrent airline) long-haul flights to support our route network expansion.
Mr Laprabang also said that Thai Smile is looking to expand its network across the Mekong Region, as the airline is very interested in flying to some of the destinations there, including Yunnan, Dali, Guang X and Lijang in China.
The airline already has a solid presence in the Mekong Region, operating flights to the capital of Myanmar, Yangon, as well as Siem Reap in Cambodia. Thai Smile has also resumed flights to Mandalay, Myanmar earlier this week, about four years after it canceled the service in 2012.
Thai Smile was formed in 2012 as a subsidiary of Thai Airways International (wholly owned) with the task of serving short-haul destinations. It operates a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft. The airline’s headquarters are located at Suvarnabhumi Airport, from where it connects THAI customers (IATA flight code – TG) on flights arriving at the airport before 7:00 am to the Mekong Region, departing at 9:00 am.
The airline has carried nearly 3 million passengers on flights to the Mekong Region last year and has the goal to reach 4 million in 2016, according to its CEO, who, answering a question regarding this at the panel discussion said:
We expect to generate up to 4 million passengers this year, up 38 per cent.
The Mekong Regions includes Yunnan and Guang Xi provinces in China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.
