THAI Receives First Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

The first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for Thai Airways arrived at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand at 1:55 AM this Sunday (17th September) after departing the aircraft manufacturer’s Everett Delivery Centre in Seattle, Washington, United States the evening before at 21:20 PM, local time.
The aircraft will initially be used on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai-Phuket route from 23rd to 30th September. After that, it will operate from Bangkok to Singapore from 1st October to 15th November. Once the second 787-9 Dreamliners is delivered to THAI, the airline will start operating roundtrip from Bangkok to Taipei in Taiwan and from Bangkok to Auckland in New Zealand.
The flight, number TG8909, was piloted by Captain Kittivaj Mongkonpruthangkoon, alongside Captain Araya Daengchai and co-pilot Chawanut Pradidpatanachan.
Upon receiving the new aircraft, THAI Acting President Mrs. Usanee Sangsingkeo said:
We are delighted to bring the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fuel-efficient aircraft into our fleet. The Boeing 787-9 demonstrates our commitment to operating the most technologically advanced aircraft for passenger comfort. This type of aircraft is currently the most technologically advanced aircraft as well as the most modern and efficient aircraft, that meets customers’ expectations.
THAI also has six other Dreamliners in its fleet since 2014, but these are 787-8s. The 787-9 Dreamliner is 6 meters (20 feet) longer, meaning it can hold more passengers and cargo, and is also consuming about 20% less fuel per flight and has 20% less emissions, thanks to the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engine installed. It is also quieter, which the local communities around the airports it takes off from will certainly appreciate.

The 787-9 Dreamliner will allow THAI to fly longer distances and to new destinations directly from Thailand - such as nonstop to North America – while providing their passengers with their exceptional onboard experience complimented by the 787 Dreamliner’s well-known and loved passenger features such as the largest window of any jet.
The first THAI 787-9 Dreamliner was named PHATTHANA NIKHOM and will be configured in two classes. The bigger, Economy Class will be arranged in a 3-3-3 seat configuration and will have 268 seats, while the remaining 30 seats in the Royal Silk Class will be arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration.
In addition, the new airline will be equipped with the Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system, with 16-inch screens on the Royal Silk Class and 11-inch screens on the Economy Class.
