After a confession Rolls Royce made on Tuesday, saying it paid money “to individuals who were agents of the State of Thailand and employees of Thai Airways”, the airline had decided to open up an investigation about it.
According to the confession it made to British authorities, Rolls Royce admitted to paying bribes to government agents and THAI employees over a period of 13 year and in order to arrange the purchase of its aircraft engines in Thailand. This happened on three occasions:
Thai Airways President Charamporn Jotikasthira held a board meeting on Wednesday concerning these revelations. After the meeting, Charamporn said this to the reporters:
We have discussed this matter, the board agreed to instruct Thai Airways to find out information and facts about this matter as soon as possible.
According to THAI President, the investigation into this could take anywhere between 30 and 60 days and if it proves to be true and the perpetrators are found, they will be sent to the National Anti-Corruption Commission where they will be prosecuted criminally.
Although many officials who served with THAI at the time are no longer with the company, Mr. Charamporn said this won’t be a problem and they can still be held responsible.
In its confession, Rolls Royce has apologized and has agreed to pay 671 British Pound to settle a total of 12 counts of bribery in Thailand, China, Russia, India, Malaysia and Nigeria. Rolls Royce will also avoid prosecution and charges of corruption and fraud.
THAI also issued a statement on its website, saying:
Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) stated that in the case of Rolls-Royce having admitted to the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) of the United Kingdom on allegations of bribery in a number of countries including Thailand from 1991-2005, THAI confirms the company conducts all its businesses in a transparent manner and without exception to corruption.
The statement continued:
THAI assures that the company will promptly request and gather information from all the sources in order to investigate the matter thoroughly. When all facts have been compiled and reviewed in detail, THAI shall expedite in determining the appropriate actions to take on any corruption found.
