Thai Lion Air, a subsidiary of Indonesian Lion Air Group has revealed plans to launch a route to China at the end of October. The airline will add daily flights from Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok to Guangzhou in China starting from 28th October this year.
TLA is also making final preparation for its impending Vietnam debut, with only a few formalities left before its passengers can book a flight to Ho Chi Minh City from Bangkok. This service is expected to launch either later in October or early in November this year.
Guangzhou is the first destination in China Thai Lion Air will operate scheduled flights to, although the carrier did previously operate charter flights to as much as nine other cities in China.
TLA will be the second carrier from Thailand to operate flights to China. Until now, only Thai AirAsia provided this sort of service, flying to Guangzhou and Kunming from Don Muang, Bangkok.
Speaking about competing with TAA and how it will deal with its competitor’s already established position on the Chinese market, an insider from Thai Lion Air said:
We are not necessarily competing with Thai AirAsia, as traffic demand is growing fast and is large enough for us to share.
Speaking of “sharing” the Chinese market, Thai Lion Air and Thai AirAsia will soon have to share it with another Thai-based carrier – Nok Air. The no-frills low-cost carrier also revealed its plans to operate flights between Don Muang and Guangzhou and Kunming in China.
It appears that Guangzhou will be sort of a test destination for Thai Lion Air, as the airline revealed it will add more destinations to China from Thailand if this one proves to be a success with its travelers. TLA did not disclose any specifics such as possible destinations, dates or schedules, however.
TLA will sell a limited number of promotional tickets, starting at 1,580 baht, one-way, inclusive of airport fees and tax and free baggage allowance of up to 30 kg.
