Thai Airways to Resume Moscow Service in October

Thai Airways International (THAI) is returning to Moscow. Airline President Charamporn Jotikasthira confirmed the carrier is planning to revive its service to the Russian capital last week during the International Air Transport Association’s general meeting held in Dublin, Ireland last week.

According to Mr Charamporn, THAI will resume flights between Bangkok and Moscow in October. This makes Moscow the only long-haul service of the four the carrier has axed last year to return. The airline has decided not to do the same for its services from Bangkok to Madrid, Johannesburg or Los Angeles, knowing full well that, while it was operating them, it got nothing but heavy losses.

THAI Not Returning to Los Angeles, Considers Vancouver and Seattle

THAI president was particularly clear that the airline will not resume flights to Los Angeles, even if the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lifts its ban on Thai-based airlines.

He said:

We are not looking at going back to Los Angeles because it is too far, gas-guzzling and crowded with competitors and we never make money from the route.

That being said, while Mr Charamporn was adamant about THAI not returning to Los Angeles, he did say the airline would consider some other destinations in the North America:

We need to look at other cities in North America such as Seattle and Vancouver, which offer more potential if we decide to return to the continent.

However, he also warned that it may take a while before the FAA removes any barriers it put on due to safety deficiencies found during audits of the civil aviation system of Thailand.

On 1st December, the FAA downgraded Thailand to Category 2, after the country has failed the safety audit. This means that airlines based in Thailand cannot open new routes, change the type of the aircraft they are using or increase the frequency on existing flights to the United States.

Mr Charamporn also said that, should THAI return to North America, it will likely use Boeing 787-9s for flights to cities there.

Thai Airways International is the only Thai-registered carrier to operate to the States, but had to ax its service to LA last October due to its latest restructuring.
