THAI Airways has posted the first profit in the three months prior to December, 2015. The company has suffered losses all year round and this is the first time it has posted a profit in the last four months.

The Thailand-based airline posted a net profit of 5.1 billion baht, or US$141.7 million. Only a year before, the company suffered a 6.4 billion baht loss in the same period.

The 51 per cent government-owned airline posted a full year loss of 13.05 billion baht and is regularly finding it difficult to stay ahead in the regional market. Still, it has managed to significantly reduce its full year losses, thanks in great deal to its turnaround plans, which included a 20 per cent cut in fuel expenses.

While posting its first net profit in a few months, THAI Airways mentioned that the global aviation industry faced numerous problems last year, such as ‘economic and political uncertainty and the global economic recession’.

Among other problems the airline pointed out the expansion of low-budget airlines, fluctuations in the exchange rate and China’s economic slowdown.

THAI Airways also said, in response to concerns regarding its international flight safety reputation, that it wasn’t affected by ICAO’s (International Civil Aviation Organization) safety rating downgrades for Thailand airline industry.

According to THAI Airways, it had recently passed the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) safety audit.
