Suvarnabhumi Airport on Tuesday vowed to take precautionary measures to counter so the called PM2.5 pollution problem in the vicinity.

PM2.5 is an atmospheric particulate matter with a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometers or about 3 percent of human air. Such particles can only be detected using an electron microscope.

A report by Nation Thailand quoted an unidentified airport official that the management will need some 144,000 liters of water daily to be sprayed around the airport and its runways.

A truck capable of loading 9,000 liters of water will be deployed four times a day - every 10 am, 11 am, 1:30 pm, and 2:30 pm - at the duty-free zone and along the inbound lane of Suvarnabhumi Road 2.

Another measure is to random-check airport vehicles and ground equipment to ensure that smoke emission will drop below 30 percent.

The airport has also enforced pollution control regulations on all public utility vehicles serving the airport such as taxis, public and shuttle buses, vans, and coaches. Such vehicles were ordered to turn off the engine while waiting for passengers and ensure regular vehicle checks.

“Vehicles and equipment that have a higher emission rate than the standard will be temporarily decommissioned and will be later fixed or replaced,” another official was quoted as saying.
