According to recent statistics from Thailand's major airport operator, Airports of Thailand, the country's aviation sector is soaring (AOT). Compared to the year before, the number of flights at Suvarnabhumi Airport doubled in the fiscal year 2022.

Between October 2021 and August 2022, Suvarnabhumi Airport saw 68,421 flights. This is a 58.36% increase from the previous fiscal year.

There were 17,52 million passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport over that time, a 203.76% increase compared to the previous fiscal year.

Kittipong Kittikachorn, director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, said: "Since the globe has started to recover from the COVID-19 epidemic, travel has become less congested. Consequently, the number of travellers flying to Thailand has grown."

"In the 16 years that Suvarnabhumi Airport has been open, it has always changed to help the country's economy get back on its feet and to push the economy, aviation industry, and tourism along with passengers."

AOT intends to undertake the "Development Plan Phase 2" so that Suvarnabhumi Airport can accommodate up to 60 million passengers per year. The current annual maximum capacity is around 45 million.

According to AOT, the development of a new runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport is 41.72 percent complete. The runway will connect to the airport's two existing runways and increase the number of planes that can land and take off per hour from 68 to 94.

Since its opening on September 28, 2006, a total of 709.25 million passengers have passed through Suvarnabhumi Airport. The airport has serviced 4.45 million flights in the last 16 years.

AOT takes care of six airports, including Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Don Mueang International Airport, Phuket International Airport, Mae Fah Luang (Chiang Rai) International Airport, and Hat Yai International Airport.
