Last week, a survey by AirHelp, ranked Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok as the 9th worst in the world, together with Kuwait, London Gatwick, Manchester, Newark Liberty in New Jersey, Stansted, Edinburgh, Mumbai, Dubai and Delhi. Understandably, the Thai airport disagrees with this ranking.

AirHelp ranked Suvarnabhumi as 68th out of 76 airports that it covered in its survey, giving it 6.3 points out of possible 10.

According to Suvarnabhumi Airport, the survey AirHelp conducted between December last year and March this year was not clear on how the three criteria – on-time performance, passenger sentiment and quality and service were calculated.

In a statement released on the airport’s Facebook page, it is said that the survey did not take into account data from Flight Stat from May, which ranked Suvarnabhumi as 13th for on-time performance based on global hub departures.

In addition, the statement also points out that two other airports named in the AirHelp worst airports list, Mumbai and Delhi, ranked among top five for best world airports serving over 40 million passengers per year in 2016 by the Airport Council International (ACI). ACI also ranked Suvarnabhumi among top 10 (10th place) for the same category as the two Indian airports.

The statement from Suvarnabhumi also asks why AirHelp’s survey did not take into account several other airports that have also been ranked highly by the ACI. This includes: Incheon in South Korea (ranked best by ACI for several years), Dallas Forth Worth, Phoenix Sky Harbour and Portland International in the United States and Kansai and Narita in Japan.

When it comes to “passenger sentiment” criteria, the Suvarnabhumi Airport said the website only took English language tweets into account, using its own analysis tool. This can probably explain the fact that out of 10 worst airports in the world, five are from English speaking countries. One is from US – New Jersey’s Newark Liberty (4th) and four from United Kingdom – London Gatwick (2nd), Manchester (3rd), Stansted (5th) and Edinburgh (6th).

This data, added the statement, had not been supported by any respected organization.

Finally, the airport also added that AirHelp’s reference to Skytrax regarding its “quality and service” score could not be verified.
