Travelers who intend to take a flight from Phuket Airport will now have a much better time doing so as the much-anticipated passenger terminal at this airport starts full-scale commercial operations starting Thursday, 15th September.
The new terminal cost 2.45 billion baht.
The launch of the new passenger terminal is scheduled for 00:01 am, when all international flights operated by a total of 35 Thai and international companies will shift from the old to the new terminal.
The official launch will happen on Friday morning and it will be presided over by Thailand’s Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha.
Ms Monrudee Gettuphan, General Manager of Phuket Airport confirmed that all systems are go for the launch and that passengers will be able to use it starting tomorrow.
Ms Monrudee also explained what this means for the passengers, saying:
Transit through Phuket airport by international passengers will be absolutely more convenient, smoother and a nice experience.
The new passenger terminal is crucial step in the 5.14 billion baht-worth expansion of the Phuket Airport. The airport expansion has seen several delays since its start and is now about three month behind schedule.
The terminal should ensure that Phuket Airport is no longer overcrowded. The airport was designed for 6.5 million passengers per year, but it had to handle much more in recent years. According to data from Airports of Thailand, in the first seven months of this year (January to July), passenger traffic at the airport went up by nearly 20 per cent (19.7%) to 8.94 million passengers.
The new passenger terminal will be able to process 5 million passengers every year.
Meanwhile, as the Phuket Airport expansion is entering the finish line, the expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport is entering its second phase.
PM Chan-o-cha was present at the ceremony at the airport this Wednesday and the construction should start in February next year.
After completion, Suvarnabhumi will be able to handle 60 million passengers per year, while right now its maximum capacity is 45 million passengers a year.
The Prime Minister’s cabinet approved the expansion plan and allotted a budget of 62.5 billion baht for it on 24th August.
