The latest report from the Association of Thai Travel Agents states that its agency members recorded 11.53% less tourist trips in January 2017 compared to the same period in 2016 at the two biggest airports in the country – Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi.
ATTA travel agency members reported 433,996 travellers at the two Bangkok-based airports in January this year. Last year, the agents handled 490,544 visits.
The ATTA President Charoen Wangananont commented on these numbers saying:
This year we hope to achieve 6 million trips handled by members… that was what we set for 2016, but we fell short of the target with 5.37 million visits…this year we believe we can achieve 6 million. Asia and ASEAN will continue to be strong markets, this year, including the top five performers; China, India, Russia, Vietnam and South Korea…Iran in the Middle East will also an emerging market.
At Don Muang International Airport, ATTA handled 118,262 tourists for the first month of this year, compared to 133,645 during the same month of the previous year, which is down 15.68%.
Most visitors came from China, 96,366, but this too was down 20.00% from January 2016 when 120,464 tourists from China visited Thailand via Don Muang.
Arrivals from Vietnam increased 198.94% between January 2016 (2,178) and January 2017 (6,511). As a result, Vietnam took over second place for arrivals at Don Muang from Indonesia, which recorded a decrease in arrivals of 9.33%. Last year, ATTA members at Don Muang handled 5,175 visitors from Indonesia, this year, the number dropped to 4,692.
When it comes to Suvarnabhumi International Airport, ATTA members handled 13.56% less foreign tourist in January 2017 (315,734), than they did in the same month of 2016 (356,899).
Most visits came from China, 133,586. However, in January 2016, a total of 180,304 visits were recorded from China by ATTA agents, for a drop this year of 25.91%.
Russia came in second in January with 36,042 visits in January, up 11.75% compared to 32,253 visits in January, 2016. South Korea ranked third with 5.59% more visits in January 2017 (18,432) than in 2016 (17,457).
The Agency did not release reports for agency traffic through Phuket Airport.
