The Airports of Thailand (AoT) reported a net profit of 5.4 billion baht in the third quarter (Q3) of financial year (FY) 2017. At the same time, air traffic volume in the period between October, 2016 and June, 2017 in six airports operated by AoT was 96.77 million passengers, which was 7.52% higher than the same period last year. Of that number, 42.89 million were domestic and 53.88 were international passengers.

In a statement, AoT said:

The overall aviation industry of Thailand during October 2016 1 June 2017 has improved comparing to the same period last year and is in line with the growth of the aviation industry of the world. The number of Chinese tourists who are visiting Thailand has recovered after an extreme decline around the end of the year 2016 as a consequence of the government’s campaign against illegal tours. Chinese tourists are the most tourists visiting Thailand. The domestic political situation is stable. The government supports tourism at both domestic and international levels. The rapid expansion of low-cost airlines brings price competitive and increases demand for air travel [among] middle-income travellers. All of these [factors] put forwards positive results to both the aviation industry and overall domestic economy.

AoT also said that it expects to reap the benefits of opening terminal two at Don Muang in March last year, as well as an international terminal in Phuket in September, 2016.

This will accommodate an increase in passengers and commercial rental areas at these airports. This corresponds to a plan to increase the non-aeronautical revenue proportion and reduce the fluctuation of the aviation business and to increase the efficiency of services at the same time.

According to AoT, several factors, including a stable political situation in Thailand, more Chinese tourists coming into Thailand for holidays and visits and the growth of low-cost airline sector, all had a positive impact on the aviation industry, the country’s economy and AoT’s Q3 financial results.

Concession revenues in Q3 FY 2017 for AoT were 3.66 billion baht, 8.28% more compared to the same period last year.
