Vietnam-based carriers are setting their sights on Thailand amid the country’s strong tourism market.

According to the Vietnam General Statistics Office, Vietnamese airlines are increasing their flight frequencies to Thailand to take advantage of the booming tourism industry.

Vietjet Air already announced last week that it would launch direct flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Pattaya, one of Thailand’s busiest tourist destinations in Southeast Asia, on December 23. The carrier currently has direct flights from Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi to Bangkok and Phuket.

Flag carrier Vietnam Airlines also introduced last month Da Nang-Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh-Phuket flights with a frequency of three times daily.

Data from the agency said that during the first 11 months of the year, Thailand arrivals from Vietnam were at 47.1 percent to 451,000.

Last year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand said around one million Vietnamese travelled to Thailand, making Vietnam its top tourism market.

Travel between the two countries was made easy with the visa-free status, one of the incentives of being members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

According to multi-financial services firm Mastercard, Vietnam ranked second in Asia Pacific’s outbound market, following only to Myanmar. It expects 7.5 million Vietnamese nationals to travel outside the country by 2021.

Meanwhile, Vietnam is poised to hit its target of 18 million visitors by year-end, with already 16.3 million tourists on record as of November 2019.
