Vietnam-based carrier VietJet Air has launched a new flight between a province in China and Bangkok, Thailand, as it banks on the influx of Chinese tourists visiting the kingdom.

State-owned news agency Xinhua reported last week that VietJet Air will fly between Bangkok and Changde four times weekly - every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. This would mark Changde Taohuayuan Airport’s first international flight.

Xinhua said VietJet will use its fleet Airbus A320 and A321 for the new flights.

Cao Lijun, mayor of Changde, said that the new flight will serve as an “air bridge” between the city and the world.

At present, Taohuayuan Airport operates 13 domestic flights to 19 cities in China. It accommodates up to 204 flights landing and taking off weekly.

Tourist arrivals in Thailand are forecast to increase by 7 percent annually over the next 11 years to 23 million on the back of the Chinese middle class’s higher purchasing power, according to Krung Thai Bank Research Center.

This would bring Chinese arrivals at 334 million by 2030, or more than double the 160 million projected for 2019 and will remain as Thailand’s top tourist market.
