It’s always busy on Phuket International Airport, but on Friday (14th April) and Sunday (16th April) the scramble and hustle was not because of passengers (that happens every day), but because of two particular visitors.

On Friday, the airport was visited by the Transport Deputy Minister Pichit Akrathit, who came to inspect the new “in-line” baggage security screening system. Accompanied by Monrudee Gettuphan, Phuket Airport Director, Mr. Pichit was able to see first-hand the new baggage system in action and see if it was really capable of dealing with long queues of passengers waiting eagerly to pass through the International Terminal.

Only two days after the deputy minister, Phuket Airport got another visit, this time from the director-general of the Department of Land Transport (DLT) Sanith Phromwong. He personally paid a visit to the Airport Bus Terminal in order to inspect what safety measures have been put there ahead of Songkran holidays.

Mr. Sanith said:

The Department of Land Transport is strict on law enforcement for bus safety during the Songkran holidays, especially on driver alcohol tests – and there are to be no bus accidents and no claims from passengers that there are not enough buses, especially over April 16-17. Buses must be ready to travel on time and the drivers must test zero for alcohol. Any drivers fail the zero alcohol test, they must be face the highest legal action. Buses must be checked before they depart and while en route to their destination so passengers will be more confident about their safety.

He also urged passengers to download the Department of Land Transport mobile app on their devices while traveling on the bus.

Passengers should download the Department of Land Transport mobile phone app to use while they are travelling on the bus.

Former PLTO Chief Sommai Sudkaow explained how passengers can use this app to send a complaint:

People can file a complaint directly through the app which will send the complaint immediately and directly to our control centre. Complaints can include speeding, not travelling along the correct route, dangerous driving, overloading and overcharging. For example, if people complain the driver is driving too fast – we can then inform the driver to slow down – or take more serious action.
