Taiwan has eliminated obligatory quarantine and welcomed the first overseas aircraft to arrive without COVID-19 restrictions, a jet from Bangkok. This morning, just after midnight, an aircraft from Bangkok landed as the first commercial flight whose passengers did not need to undergo quarantine upon arrival.

As the COVID epidemic began to abate, Taiwan lagged behind other Asian nations in easing prohibitions. They needed a seven-day quarantine, which was lowered to three days in June, and have now completely eliminated the requirement. Taiwan has a strong immunisation rate, and despite the approximately seven million domestic COVID infections in 2020, the government believes it is time to return to normalcy and reopen the country completely.

To honour their arrival at Taoyuan International Airport, located just outside of Taipei, black teddy bears were presented to incoming passengers on the Bangkok aircraft. They deplaned to be met by authorities and a media circus, with the director general of the Tourism Bureau personally greeting the visitors to Taiwan. As tourists got off the plane, they were eager to pose for photos with officials and the media.

According to the Bangkok Post, while there is no longer any strict quarantine, new travellers are still expected to check their health and perform fast COVID tests. The tests are self-administered, and travellers are only expected to keep an eye on their health for the first week after they arrive.

Before the epidemic, Taiwan was a popular tourist destination, known for its lively cities and wonderful cuisine, as well as its magnificent natural surroundings and scuba diving. When countries started to let people travel between them again, Taiwanese and foreign residents were able to leave and come back, but they had to stay in quarantine for two weeks at home or in a hotel first.

Now that travel restrictions have been lifted, Eva Airways and China Carriers, the two major international airlines of Taiwan, are rapidly restoring flights to levels comparable to those before the epidemic. They are expanding capacity on existing routes and introducing new ones, such as flights to Da Nang, Vietnam.
