In the next couple of weeks, Thai Lion Air (TLA) will start offering its customers five new routes from its hub in Don Muang, Bangkok – two domestic and five international. This will include the following cities: Khon Kaen, Phitsanulok, Hanoi in Vietnam and Chinese cities Nanjing and Nanchang,
Starting on 17th March, the low-cost carrier will launch the first of the five new routes between Bangkok and Khon Kaen with 13 flights per week. Next, the LCC will launch an eight flight per week route on Bangkok-Hanoi on 24th March. Two days later, TLA will start flying daily flights to Nanjing and 6-weekly flights to Phitsanulok. Finally, on 1st April, TLA will commence regular four flights per week to Nanchang.
In addition to the five new routes, TLA is also thinking about adding two more routes to China. Although the destinations haven’t yet been announced, it’s most likely to be to Kunming and Jiangsu, as the airline wants to take advantage of the increased travel demand to secondary cities in mainland China from Thailand.
A senior TLA executive said about the Chinese market:
We are seeing more Chinese free independent travellers coming to Thailand and many of them choose to LCCs like ours.
Thai Lion Air introduced its first flight to China relatively recently, on 28th October, 2016. This was a daily flight between Bangkok and Guangzhou. As the destination proved to be very successful in a short amount of time, it was soon followed by two more services from Don Muang to the Chinese cities of Chengdu and Chongqing, both launched on 1st March this year. TLA operates both routes on a daily basis.
The new services (both those officially announced and those in preparation) are the continuation of Thai Lion Air’s aggressive network expansion plan and come shortly after the carrier introduced Bangkok-Chengdu, Bangkok-Chongqing, Bangkok-Trang and Chiang Mai-Surat Thani.
To help with the expansion, the low-cost carrier has ordered 25 new Boeing 737-900ER aircraft, the delivery of which it expects to receive in April.
At the moment, TLA serves seven international flights and 11 domestic cities with 14 routes.
