In December, Thai AirAsia X will start two direct trips between Thailand and Australia. The airline will resume service from Bangkok to Melbourne and Sydney on December 1 and 2, respectively.
Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays will see four weekly flights on the Bangkok to Sydney route. On Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, the route from Bangkok to Melbourne will run three times a week.
A 337-seat Airbus A330 with 12 Business Class seats and 365 Economy Class seats will service both trips.
Economy one-way flights from Melbourne to Bangkok now start at $299 AUD (7,552 Thai baht). A premium flatbed Business Class one-way ticket costs $1,199 AUD (30,293 Thai baht).
The acting CEO of Thai AirAsia X said this about the possibility of the new routes: "Australia is one of the top three places for Thai students to study and a major tourist destination for Thai visitors."
"Both Thailand and Australia have attractive qualities that draw tourists from the opposite hemisphere. For foreign tourists, Bangkok is a one-stop shop for nightlife, culture, shopping, and Thai food. Additionally, it is an important transit hub for Australian travellers."
Jim Parashos, chief of aviation at Melbourne Airport, also voiced his acceptance of the new routes: "We are happy to welcome Thai AirAsia X to the family at Melbourne Airport. Australians like to go to Thailand, so we expect that these new direct routes will be well-received, especially by leisure travellers who want to go back to Southeast Asia to enjoy Thailand's great food, beaches, and culture.
"This new route will also drive tourism into Victoria and support a growing Thai international student market. Prior to the epidemic, Thailand was one of the top 10 foreign student source markets for our state and a significant contributor to our economy. This new route will increase tourism in Victoria and serve the expanding international student market in Thailand. "Prior to the epidemic, Thailand was one of the state's top 10 foreign student source markets and a significant economic contributor."
AirAsia X, a Malaysian airline, will commence service from Kuala Lumpur to many Australian cities. The airline will begin service between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney on September 9 and between Kuala Lumpur and Perth, Melbourne, and Auckland (via Sydney) in November.
