As Laos is slowly opening its skies to low-cost carriers, Thai AirAsia is ready to introduce its second route there. This time, TAA will operate between Bangkok and Vientiane and will start serving the route in July this year.
This way, Thai AirAsia will become the first no-frills carrier to operate this route. TAA will take off from Don Muang Airport every day at 12:05 PM and arrive at the Wattay Airport in Vientiane at 1:25 PM. Return flight will depart from Wattay at 2:15 PM and land at Don Muang at 3:35 PM.
Before Vientiane, TAA introduced a daily service from Bangkok to Luang Prabang on 24th March, effectively becoming the first low-cost airline to operate to the old royal city in Laos.
Director of business development at SET-listed Asia Aviation Plc., one of the major shareholders at Thai AirAsia, Bovornovadep Devakula, confirmed TAA has secured the necessary rights to commence flights to and from Vientiane from the authorities in Laos.
Mr Bovornovadep said:
There is a greater understanding among Laotian officials now about the role of airlines in driving tourism and economic activities, which Laos now seriously wants to promote.
He also said that serving the capital cities of Asean states is the main strategy for Thai AirAsia’s regional network expansion and added:
When it comes to flying to a country. We normally make sure that we descend on the capital city and then to another tourist spot.
However, when it comes to Laos, the situation is somewhat different, mostly because its authorities are placing high priority on promoting tourism industry in Luang Prabang and believe Thai AirAsia’s entry would have a big impact on it, particularly at the end of the high season.
The airline is looking to attract Thais who would normally travel to the capital of Laos by catching a domestic flight from Thai capital of Bangkok to Udon Thani, before traveling by road to Vientiane.
About this, Mr Bovornovadep said:
We believe there will be a lot of people who want to fly directly to Vientiane, avoiding hassles, cutting travel time and saving travel costs related to multi-mode transportation. We think we can fly them directly with a fare of only 1,500 baht one-way.
He also said TAA has currently no plans for other destinations in Laos as it wants to concentrate on Vientiane and Luang Prabang.
