The Airport of Thailand (AoT) says that the new passenger terminal at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport will be open by April 2023.
In addition, there will be an "Automated People Mover" train, which will be the nation's first driverless electric train used in Thai airports, which will allow passengers to get between each terminal.
Then, Nitinai Siriamatthakarn, president of the AoT, told the media that the new passenger terminal, Satellite 1 (SAT1), was ready and would be open for business in April of next year. He also said that the airport would be able to handle up to 68 flights per hour and double the number of people who could use it from 45 million to 60 million per year.
The new SAT1 terminal is a four-story structure covering an area of 216,000 square metres. B2 is for APM trains, B1 is for the airport office, G is for a conveyor belt, 2 is for arrivals, 3 is for departures, and 4 is for eateries. The APM trains will be operational at the same time. The nation's first driverless electric train in an airport will transport passengers between the old and new terminals.
Nitinai noted that AoT's 6 APM trains were imported from Austria. Each train is equipped with two compartments that can accommodate 210 passengers every journey, or 5,900 passengers per hour. To assure its safety, stability, precision, and punctuality, each train will undergo rigorous testing prior to entering operation. Nitinai states that no issues have been detected since the AOT testing began.
