Skytrax Names Suvarnabhumi 5th Best Airport in 40-50 Million Passengers per Year Category

Skytrax World Airport Awards 2015 has namedropped Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport as the 5th best airport with a scale of 40 to 50 million passengers per year.

Suvarnabhumi Airport was ranked behind airports in Seoul, Munich, Kuala Lumpur and Madrid, said the airport’s General Manager Sirote Duangratana.

In addition to being named 5th best for 40-50 passengers per year category, Suvarnabhumi also ranked 10th for the Best Airport Staff in Asia according to Skytrax and reached 36th place for the World's Top 100 Airports.

Airports were ranked based on over 13 million votes gathered online from passengers via Worldairportsurvey website, as well as through telephone questionnaires between June last year and January this year.

Phuket Airport Passenger Traffic Grows from Last Year

Meanwhile, the third busiest airport in Thailand – Phuket – has become even busier compared to last year. The airport recorded an 18 per cent growth in passenger traffic this January, compared to the same month in 2015. This is one of the highest growths in passenger traffic in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.

Phuket Airport also handled 1.42 million passengers in January. It was ranked 3rd in passenger traffic for airports capable of handling between 5 and 15 million passengers per year, behind Chennai in India and Osaka Itami in Japan. Those two airports saw a 7.3% and 3% growth in January, respectively.

According to the data published by the ACI (Airports Council International), most major airports in this region were very busy and have recorded double-digit passenger growth for the first month of the year.

ACI further lists New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport as the one with the highest growth in passenger traffic for January – 21 per cent. Right behind it is China’s Shanghai Pudong Airport with 20.5 per cent growth.

Incheon, Honk Kong and Singapore airports also had double digits passenger growth in January, with 13.7%, 13.3% and 10% growth rates.

The Airports Council International report also shows there an overall increase in passenger traffic of 10.6 per cent for Asia-Pacific and 9.8 per cent for Middle East in January.
