This update follows an announcement by Thai tourism authorities last month that they want to attract more visitors from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The Minister of Tourism, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, said that Kazakh and Uzbek tourists started to show interest after Thailand changed its Visa on Arrival policy from 15 days to 30 days on October 1.
In the first eight months of this year, 2,496 Uzbek travellers arrived in Thailand. This year, the Tourism Ministry expected 8,500 visitors. In 2019, there were 19,000 Uzbek visitors visiting Thailand. Phiphat observed that Uzbek visitors had a great purchasing capacity.
Meanwhile, tourism in Thailand reached a new milestone. As of October 26, the number of overseas visitors visiting the country had surpassed 7 million. It puts the nation within the Tourism Authority of Thailand's target range of 7 million to 10 million visitors for 2022.
Thailand's top five entrance gateways include three international airport hubs and two land crossings. As predicted, Suvarnabhumi Airport brought in the most passengers, more than four times as many as Phuket International Airport, the second-busiest port of entry. Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok's secondary airport, pulled in a little more than half as many passengers as Phuket.
