In preparation for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit at the end of this week, the Immigration Bureau (IB) is tightening security at all of the country's international airports.

According to the Bangkok Post, IB commissioner Pol Lt Gen Pakphumpipat Sajjapan said yesterday (November 13) that officials are taking a closer look at foreign arrivals, especially those who may pose a security danger to the summit.

Since the beginning of October, officials have denied entry to over 2,000 people, many of whom were already on an immigration blacklist, he said, adding that authorities would also closely monitor the actions of foreign residents during the summit.

Pol Lt Gen Pakphumpipat said that the agency is cooperating with its international counterparts to guarantee that its officers have the most up-to-date information on suspects and/or wanted offenders who may attempt to enter the country. He said: "Those who are implicated in suspicious activities will be interrogated and deported".

As a result of the meeting, extra officers will be assigned to the immigration checkpoint counters at Suvarnabhumi airport, as the number of passengers is expected to grow.

Pol Lt Gen Pakphumpipat said that between October 10 and Saturday, 785 foreign migrant labourers were detained for overstaying their visas, while 1,249 others were apprehended for unlawful entrance; 770 from Laos, 349 from Myanmar, 108 from Cambodia, and 22 "others."

Two persons on Interpol's Red Notice list were among those detained, according to the official.
