As the renovations at the Phuket International Airport are causing major delays and confusion among visitors, the airport’s officials have asked everyone to have “understanding” during this period.
In a statement, Airports of Thailand (AoT), the organization that manages Phuket, in addition to five other major airports in Thailand said:
We apologise for any inconvenience during the renovations. We are working to improve the building to accommodate the increasing number of passengers at the airport for the high season. We have officers posted to direct travellers to the correct areas where they need to go and we have signs posted through the terminal.
AoT continued the statement:
We have also added extra seating in a new waiting area to make it more convenient for passengers needing to wait for the flights. We recommend passengers arrive at least two hours before they need to check in (sic) for their flights. We are also taking steps to alleviate traffic jams at the entrance to the terminal.
Since the renovations stated on 1st November, passengers using the airport have been complaining left and right about the delays.
A local expat said:
I just dropped and pick up guests at the domestic terminal, I understand that they have to work but the person or the AoT who organized the temporary domestic terminal is a shame for Thailand and Phuket and we are just at the start of the season. I invite you to go to have a look... it is unbelievable to be able to make such a mess.
He added:
There are already taxis who do not want to pick up guests as there is a unnecessary procedure at the International Terminal, but the mess at the domestic one is tops. I don’t know how we will find our guests when more arrive the coming weeks.
Initially, the plan was for the renovations to last 330 days. However, it appears passengers will have to be patient a bit longer as the AoT notice explained the project will actually take 406 days – 256 for Phase 1 and 150 for Phase 2.
AoT also advised visitors on its Facebook page to access the new International Terminal to park either on Level 1 near “Door 5” or on Level 3 at “Door 3”. At the Domestic Terminal, vehicles can circle through the drop-off zone every 15 minutes.
