The Office of the Vocational Education Commission (OVEC) has increased the number of its aircraft maintenance centers from two to six as it plans to keep up with the increasing demand for aircraft maintenance technicians in the country with the additional four centers it has built.

The new training centers were opened in Bangkok, Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen and Samut Prakan.

According to Wanich Oumsri, Deputy Secretary-General at OVEC, the goal of this expansion is to ease the shortage of aircraft maintenance workers and train more professionals in this industry.

Mr. Wanich said:

Earlier, Thailand had the capacity to train less than 100 aircraft maintenance technicians a year. But with the four new training centers, the number produced by OVEC can be raised to 180 per year.

In addition to the four new training centers that OVEC has opened, there are plans for more in other provinces with airports. However, as there are currently not enough aerospace engineering instructors, that plan can’t proceed as quickly as OVEC would want.

Wanich commented:

We can establish more than six aircraft maintenance training centers, but we also need to consider quality control, so for now we have decided to move slowly but steadily.

According to Mr. Wanich, OVEC can train up to 180 aircraft maintenance technicians every year. However, even with this, they can’t keep up with the growing demand for them. To meet the industry demands, Thailand would need to train a minimum of 500 technicians per year, said OVEC Deputy Secretary-General.

According to the latest projection by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), 35 million of foreign tourists should visit the country this year, about 2.5 million more than 2016.

Airports of Thailand (AoT) predicts about 8-9% growth in passenger traffic through the six airports in oversees, including Don Muang, Suvarnabhumi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai. Thailand, along with Malaysia and Indonesia, is also projected to lead the traffic growth in South Asia and the abilities of its major airports to handle the influx of tourists will be vital for that.
