Whatever happened to those refunds for the cancelled Orient Thai Airlines service between Hong Kong and Bangkok in March? Four months after the Thai-based carrier suspended the route due to “mechanical problems”, passengers are still waiting for their tickets to be refunded, but they still haven’t got any response or update from the airline.
Initially, Orient Thai promised to refund its customers in 45 days, but clearly hasn’t done so yet.
According to Joseph Tung Yaochung, Executive Director of the Travel Industry Council, over 10,000 passengers could have been affected by Orient Thai Airlines cancelling the route in March. To make matters even worse, Tung also said that more than 100 travel agencies had complained to the TIC about the cancelations since the month of March.
The Council managed to get in contact with Orient Thai headquarters last week and was told that someone for the airline will come to Hong Kong to negotiate the refund. The airline, however, didn’t specify when the representative might be coming.
According to the vice chairman of the Democratic Party Andrew Wan, his office has received more than 20 cases asking for help in regards to the refunds.
Mr Wan called both the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department and the Consumer Council to be more active in solving this problem, especially since legal actions against an overseas company in HK can be complicated and difficult.
Wan said:
It’s better for the government to directly talk to them.
One of the customers, Ms. Leung said that she purchased 17 flight tickets between Hong Kong and Bangkok, in addition to the hotel bookings, all via a local travel agency back in January. She intended to take a trip with her company during Easter. To her dismay, the airline informed her two months later that their flight has been cancelled and that she could expect refunds in the next 45 days.
However, she didn’t get her money back to this day and is unable to contact the airline since June.
Costumers are advised to call or visit the Thai consulate in Hong Kong and seek assistance there about their problem.
