Could a service to China be the answer to all of Nok Air’s problems? Probably not, but adding the third foreign country after Yangon, Myanmar and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam would be a good start for the troubled SET-listed carrier.
On Friday, Nok Air Chief Executive Officer Patee Sarasin revealed the low-cost carrier will start flying to China in December this year, more particularly to Guangzhou and Kunming. Both flights will take off from Don Muang International Airport.
So far, Mr Patee could only tell the public that the flights to China will commence at the end of the year, but he could not give any information about the fare structures, timetables or the exact launch dates for either the Don Muang-Guangzhou or Don Muang-Kunming service.
Speaking about the importance of Chinese market, Nok Air CEO said:
China is clearly a very big market with significant traffic flow.
According to Mr Patee, Nok Air will focus on high-end passenger traffic when it comes to its Chinese operations. This is quite different from the typical strategy of no-frills carriers and focusing on volume.
Sources report that Nok Air will initially fly 3-4 times per week to Guangzhou and Kunming, respectively, but with the idea to operate on a daily basis in the future.
Nok Air will have competition from two other Thai carriers when it finally flies to China in Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air.
Thai AirAsia already operates Don Muang-Guangzhou and Don-Muang-Kunming flights for some time.
The other competitor will be Thai Lion Air. TLA announced it will start flying to Guangzhou from 28th October, also from Don Muang International Airport.
The no-frills carrier also revealed plans to service more Chinese cities from 2017, although it didn’t provide any further information which cities would those be.
Last year, 7.9 million people from China visited Thailand, 71 per cent up from 2014. The expectations are that the number will exceed 10 million by the end of 2016.
