Thai-based low-budget carrier Nok Air has announced today that it will investigate a comment one of its pilots made on a Line app chat group on Sunday afternoon. The pilot in question has posted an image of the former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, along with a comment that she is taking the flight from Phrae to Bangkok.
This was posted about 12 minutes before the plane was scheduled to depart the airport in Phrae. During this time, the pilot should be busy with pre-flight checks and making sure the passengers are safe before the plane can take off.
The comment in itself is harmless probably, but was circulated rather quickly on the chat app and also on other social media. Some of the replies were not very “friendly” towards the former PM.
One person even commented “cfit Navin”. In aviation phraseology “cfit” means “controlled flight into terrain” and represents the situation (usually an accident) where an otherwise fully functional plane is inadvertently flown into the ground, mountain or a body of water, while under pilot control.
Acting Pheu Thai Party Secretary-General Phumtham Wechayachai urged Nok Air CEO Patee Sarasin to take responsibility for the comment.
Nok Air Chief Executive Officer Patee Sarasin apologized today to Ms Yingluck for the unfortunate comment and inappropriate action of one of his pilots. He also said this morning that every employee is entitled to his or her personal opinion, but that they should abstain from expressing political opinions while on duty.
Nok Air CEO said:
As the chief executive, I cannot accept anything that damages the airline’s image. I truly apologize to Ms. Yingluck. We are proud she uses our service.
According to Mr Patee, Nok Air does not have a political stance and all staff should fully concentrate on doing their jobs, making sure that every passenger is safe in-flight and that everyone arrives unharmed to their selected destination.
Pheu Thai Party chief legal adviser Chusak Sirnail was also onboard with Ms Yingluck. Mr. Chusak said, although the comment was made in fun, the pilot had an ethical and professional responsibility to his passengers.
