According to the Deputy General Director of the Department of Civil Aviation of Thailand Ampawan Wannako, Nok Air will cancel 56 more flights until 26 March. That’s in addition to those the struggling carrier has already canceled since its problems with a lack of pilots started.

Ms. Ampawan said:

Nok Air passengers affected by the cancelations will be transferred to other airlines, as Nok Air cleans up its internal problems, along with preparing flight slots for the new season starting next month.

The Thailand-based budget carrier earlier announced that it will resume all flights it has canceled from Friday onwards.

More than 500 Flights Canceled Since February

Since its shortage problems started, Nok Air had to cancel over 500 flights since February. At the beginning of this month, the carrier said that all flight routes would return to normal schedule as of 11th March, but that clearly hasn’t happened.

Just on 23rd February, the airline had to write off 20 flights. Following this, Nok Air canceled in average 10 flights every day.

At the beginning of this month, Nok Air chief official Patee Sarasin confirmed the airline probably won’t be able to resume normal operations until April most likely.

Pilots Going on a Strike are Not Helping the Problem

In addition to its cabin crew shortage, Nok Air also had to deal with a walk out arranged by a group of its pilots on Sunday, 14 February in Don Muang Airport.

Thailand’s Deputy Minister of Transport Omsin Chivapruck called a meeting two days after the 10 pilots staged a strike, but Nok Air didn’t send a representative there.

The pilots were allegedly unhappy about the latest auditing process, which is in line with the European Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA). According to the reports, all 10 pilots failed the audit.

Nok Air recently apologized to its customers for, basically, ruining their travel plans via email.

At the moment, Nok Air headquarters in Bangkok has been mostly silent about this, while the office in Phuket refused to confirm whether any flights from this city are affected by the latest cancelation.

The only ‘comment’ came from the airline’s CEO Patee Sarasin via Facebook. In it, Patee wrote:

No need to say much… Action speaks louder than words.
