Nok Air Blames Bad Weather for Delays

Last Monday, Transport Minister of Thailand Mr Arkhom Termpittayapaisith warned Thai airlines with frequently delayed flights that they will have to improve their operations. Mr Arkhom also tasked the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) to take action against carriers who miss their flight schedules.

One of the worst offenders when it comes to delaying flights is Nok Air, a fact pointed by the CAAT chief Chula Sukmanop, who said on Monday the agency had not yet decided whether it will suspend the troubled carrier as he first wants to sit with its management and find out why the carrier is experiencing these problems.

Today, Nok Air revealed their last week’s delays were due to bad weather and has issued a statement, apologizing to travelers for the delays between 26th September and 2nd October.

According to the announcement, Nok Air planes could not take off or land due to the heavy and continuous rain during the past week.

Nok Air also cited the need to comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) standards regarding aviation safety in particular.

Last year, ICAO issued a “red flag” to several Thai-based airlines, including Nok Air, indicating a number of aviation safety concerns as a reason. Nok Air is now among the carriers that will go through a re-inspection of its Air Operator Certificate (AOC).

Nok Air has suffered problems with flight delays throughout the year. It all started in February when its pilots organized a strike, accusing the company of forcing them to exceed their flight hours. Since then, Nok Air has been facing severe pilot shortages and has had to delay or even cancel flights.

The problem appeared to have been solved, but it seems to have reared its ugly head once again.
