Busy Airport

With the resumption of direct flights between Moscow and Phuket International Airport, tourism in Phuket received a further boost from Russian visitors. In November, the airport anticipates an average of 30,000 arrivals per day. Yesterday afternoon, Ikar Airlines was the first to arrive from Moscow, followed by a flight from the Russian state carrier Aeroflot at 9:10 p.m.

Ikar is an aviation charter operated by Pegas Fly. Typically, they fly from Moscow to Phuket, Krabi, and U-Tapao Airport, which serves Pattaya. Yesterday, at 1.23 p.m., their jet arrived at Phuket Airport to a special welcome from airport workers.

Approximately 449 Russian passengers were onboard. They were met by the Phuket staff administrative officer and airport workers who had come to celebrate the return of direct flights from Russia to Phuket.

Three Russian airlines will transport people from throughout Russia to Phuket during the winter high season, when many Russian visitors flock to warm places such as Phuket, Koh Samui, and other tropical Southeast Asian sites.

The first airline to come, Ikar Airlines, will operate flights from Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow to Phuket every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. The schedule is set until March 25. Aeroflot will fly twice as often as Ikar between the same two airports. It will fly every day until the 25th of March, when the season will change.

Finally, Siberia Airlines will carry Russians between Phuket and three important cities. From November through March, they will operate three flights each week, two on Monday and one on Thursday. The Thursday flight will transport passengers from Irkutsk, Siberia, to Phuket. On Mondays, the airline will fly flights from Vladivostock, a port city in the far east, to Phuket. They will also depart from Russia's third-largest city, Novosibirsk, every Monday until the end of March.
