Thai Lion Air (TLA) is on its way to embark on a new journey and transform from a short-haul to a medium-to-long haul air operator. The first of the three widebody Airbus A330-300 aircraft has arrived in Bangkok this Wednesday.

TLA passengers flying the new A330-300 will have the choice between two classes. The economy class has 374 seats, while the premium economy has 18 seats, for a total of 392 seats. All seats have a back-seat in-flight entertainment screen, a unique offer when it comes to LCCs.

The plane arrived straight from the aircraft manufacturer’s facility in Toulouse, France.

The first A330-300 will initially be used on a domestic route between Phuket and Chiang Mai. However, Mr. Aswin said in an interview for local media that TLA will probably start flying the plane internationally as of the first quarter of 2018. The plane will most likely be deployed on the Phuket-Shanghai route, which is currently flown by Boeing 737s as a charter service.

The other two A330-300s are scheduled to arrive by the end of the year in December. In addition, Aswin Yangkirativorn, Chief Executive Officer of TLA confirmed that the carrier will aim to add at least five more Boeing B737 MAX planes to its fleet in 2018.

The Indonesia Lion Air’s subsidiary has a fleet consisting primarily of narrow-body planes, including 27 Boeing 737-800s and 737-900ERs.

TLA ordered the three A330-300s with the intention of making a stronger impact on the Chinese market as this will allow the airline to fly to more distant destinations. Already, two more routes in China, besides Shanghai, have been changed from charter to regular service – Hangzhou and Xian.

On the other hand, the Thai carrier has to wait for the approval from Japanese and South Korean authorities to start a regular A330-300 service to Narita and Incheon.

TLA CEO said:

We are aware that there are so many players on the Japanese and South Korean markets and competition is fierce, but we believe there is a room for us to fit in with value proposition.
