The fact that China Southern Airlines plans to restart flights to Bangkok is excellent news for the Thai tourist sector, which hopes to attract an additional 12 million international visitors by the end of the year.

More than 12 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand in 2019, accounting for a quarter of all international visitors to the monarchy. The number of visitors visiting the Land of Smiles increased from 2016 (8.76 million) to 2017 (9.81 million) to 2018 (10.54 million) to 2019 (12 million), but the COVID-19 epidemic halted this growth.

According to the Bangkok Post, China Southern Airlines said it would restart service to Bangkok, Tokyo, Jakarta, Dubai, and Manila by the end of the month.

But there's more. China Eastern Airlines said on Weibo that, beginning on October 30, it would fly 108 foreign flights each week to 42 destinations, including Tokyo, Seoul, and Dubai, an increase from the current 54 flights and 25 itineraries.

Air China restarted service from many Chinese cities to Manila, Jakarta, Tokyo, Athens, Vancouver, and Los Angeles at the end of September.

Hainan Airlines said on Saturday, October 15, that, beginning November 6, it would introduce a second weekly service between Chongqing and Rome.

The news will be a breath of fresh air for both Thailand and Chinese visitors who have been unable to travel for over three years because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

In his opening address at China's 20th Party Congress in Beijing on Sunday, President Xi Jinping announced that the mainland remains committed to a zero-COVID policy. However, there seems to be a reduction in border restrictions.

In June, China reduced the quarantine period for hotel arrivals to seven days, in addition to the three days at home.

China Southern shares climbed to 3.6% in Hong Kong on Tuesday morning, while China Eastern and Air China shares climbed to 5.6% and 5.1%, respectively. The value of Beijing Capital International Airport Company rose by 3.1%.

According to VariFlight, flights into and out of China remain around 95% below pre-Covid levels.
